Alligators in Texas are mostly inactive from mid-October until early March. … Hatchling alligators are about 9 inches long and will stay near the female for up to two years.
Many crocodiles vocalize to communicate. The young of various species use several squeaking and grunting sounds, and adults may grunt, growl, and hiss. The sound is created by air passing through a constricted opening such as the glottis, nostrils or the even the palatal valve. … This hiss variant is produced when the crocodile is starting to feel threatened in some way.
For the first time, researchers have shown that the pre-hatching calls of baby Nile crocodiles actually mean something to their siblings and to their mothers. The calls–which are perfectly audible to humans and sound like “umph! … Those cries also tell the mother croc to start digging up the nest.

Queensland Department of Environment and Science have discovered crocodiles making a deep underwater booming sound. The lead researcher has described the vocalisation as ‘a bit like drums’ but said its meaning is not yet properly understood.
Crocodilians are the most vocal of all reptiles, and calls vary widely depending on species, age, size and sex. Female crocodiles have long been known as attentive parents, carrying their newly hatched offspring in their mouths from sandy nests on land to the water and even manipulating intact leathery eggs in their mouths to liberate slow-hatching babies.
His research seems to suggest that crocodiles may be much more affectionate than previously thought, and can even harbor feelings towards humans. “A man who rescued a crocodile that had been shot in the head became close friends with the animal.
